Deutsch: Landschulheim Herrlingen, 1926 von Anna Essinger gegründet
English: Plaque at the former Landschulheim Herrlingen, founded in 1926 by Anna Essinger, who moved the school to England after the Nazis seized power. The new school was officially called New Herrlingen, but came to be known after the name of the house in Kent, where they moved, Bunce Court. Landschulheim Herrlingen continued as a Jewish school for a few years, but was then closed. The property was then turned into a way station for elderly Jews, which was then also closed when the occupants were deported to extermination camps. The plaque reads, "Ulm native Anna Essinger founded the HERRLINGEN BOARDING SCHOOL in this house on May 1, 1926. It was the progressive education movement's first private boarding school in Württemberg. She left [Germany] with her pupils in October 1933. Hugo Rosenthal carried her work forward as the HERRLINGEN JEWISH BOARDING SCHOOL and during the years of persecution, enabled Jewish children [to have] a protected education and a new self-awareness. The school had to close in March 1939." |
