Description Piet de Gruyter begon in 1829 met een paardengrutmolen in pakhuis 'De Lintmolen' in Den Bosch. De Gruyter groeide uit tot een kruideniersimperium van ruim 550 winkels en bijna 7500 werknemers. In de jaren zestig ging het snel bergafwaarts. De overgang van luxe kruidenierszaak naar standaard supermarkt ging gepaard met grote problemen. In 1970 werd het bedrijf verkocht aan de Steenkolen Handelsvereniging in Utrecht. De SHV kreeg het bedrijf voor veertien miljoen gulden in handen, maar er zat ook een schuld van zestien miljoen aan vast. In 1977 sloot de laatste winkel van De Gruyter zijn deuren.
