Gearranan Blackhouse Village.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gearranan Blackhouse Village. Blackhouse is the name given to these native dwellings of the Western Isles. Some say it is a corruption of a gallic phrase and others because of the very few and small windows the houses had.

The structure including the small windows were formed to combat the strong windows off the Atlantic Ocean and reduce heat loss.

This village was one of the last groups of unmodernised houses to be used and was lived in regularly until the late 1960s. The houses have since been converted and modernised and are used as a tourist attraction
