Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Site of the Parish of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gdów - shrine of our Lady of Gdów.

This painting is one of a pair of large oil paintings displayed in the Church ("Kościół") of Gdów, each of which has two panels depicting, in four parts, the story of King Władysław III (1424-1444) when lost hunting in the woods near Gdów. On seeking the Virgin Mary's help in the Church the king was successfully guided home to his castle and expressed his appreciation by bestowing the Church with special privileges and enduring annual donations in the form of food and general supplies. The paintings include the story in verse especially composed in 1877.

Gdów Church is on a site located close to where the historic Battle of Gdów took place in 1846 and in which Polish 'insurgents', under the command of the absent Colonel Suchorzewski, fought for independence from Austria in the only battle of the Kraków Uprising. Ludwik Kusionowicz, the parish priest in Gdów from 1842 and who later became Dean of Wieliczka, chronicled the Battle of Gdów and also provided refuge in the Church for supporters of the Polish nationalists who were fleeing the Austrian military and their peasant militia.
The Scotch Mist Gallery contains many photographs of historic buildings, monuments and memorials of Poland.

I uznał natychmiast Panny Świętej dzieło, gdy jakoby coś go za rękę wzięło, Utrafił drogę prosto ku zamkowi - a stąd Maryi przyznaje cudowi."
