Summary
[edit]DescriptionGaziantep Nuri Mehmet Paşa Camii 0909.jpg |
English: This is a platform to the left of the mihrab, from where one could speak to the congregation. The minbar is at the right side of the mihrab.
The notice at the mosque indicates: According to the Judicial Register and a liman (Ottoman royal decree) this mosque was built by Nuri Mehmet Paşa a few years before 1786. Two epigraphs on the minaret and the mihrab (prayer niche) show dates of 1785 and 1834 respectively. During the War of Independence, the entire minaret and the domes of the prayer portico were destroyed. The latter were repaired in 1954 by the Ministry of Education and the mosque was used as a museum until 1969. A new minaret was built in 1975 next to the mosque. The mosque consists of two sections, each parallel to the kiblah (direction of Mecca). The portal is decorated with black and white stones. The area in front of the mihrab is domed but the other areas are covered with cross vaults. The portico is also domed. At the north of the mosque there is a large courtyard with hazira (tombs contained in the enclosure of a mosque). Within this hazira […] the tomb of Nuri Mehmet Paşa can be found. The mosque was restored in 2008 by the General Directorate of Foundations. |
