t effet, vue du vestibulequi précède la grande salle. Le gothique xme siècle de cet imposant hôtel de ville peut paraîtreà quelques-uns un peu massif et sévère. Mais nous trouvons quandmême quil convient bien à cette ville industrielle de Manchesterentourée dusines. Cette architecture compacte semble faite pourrésister aux actions délétères dune atmosphère chargée de gaz et defumées. Dailleurs, M. Waterhouse a suffisamment mouvementé, enplan et en élévation, ses façades chargées de pinacles, de lucarnes,de tourelles, etc., pour que lensemble apparaisse bien décoratif. LeTown Hall surprend agréablement au milieu de cette grande cité quisemble peu faite pour éveiller des idées artistiques. Ajoutons quedeux hautes tours, la principale chargée dhorloges et de cloches,complètent le grand aspect de ce monument qui nous parait une desexpressions les plus complètes du gothique moderne en Angleterre.
