Summary
[edit]DescriptionGastell Rhaglan-Raglan Castle - geograph.org.uk - 1759432.jpg |
English: Gastell Rhaglan/Raglan Castle The Great Gate, standing between two hexagonal towers, served as the main entrance to this impressive fifteenth-century castle built around 1432 for Sir William ap Thomas, known as 'Y marchog glas o Went', (the blue knight of Gwent) and his son William Herbert. The castle was re-modelled by William Somerset, third earl of Worcester between 1549-89. Much of the hexagonal-shaped Great Tower and lavish suites of state apartments still survive. See also 1759407 and 1759417 The ruination of the castle came at the end of one of the longest sieges of the English Civil War. The Royalist Henry Somerset, Marquess of Worcester, was compelled to surrender to General Fairfax on 19 August 1646. A systematic slighting of the castle commenced and the Great Tower was largely destroyed by mining. |
