Summary

[edit]
Description

Garnetite (grossular garnet skarn) from the Eocene of Mexico (~5.7 cm across).

Skarn is a contact metamorphic rock with a crystalline texture. It forms by heating and addition of elements (metasomatism) to country rock in the immediate vicinity of an igneous intrusion (batholith, stock, sill, dike, laccolith).

The rock shown above is a garnetite, a crystalline, ~monomineralic, garnet-bearing metamorphic rock. Garnetites often form by contact metamorphism/metasomatism and can be called garnet skarns. This garnet skarn is composed of grossular garnet, a calcium aluminum silicate mineral (Ca3Al2(SiO4)3). It formed about 38 to 40 million years ago, during the late Middle Eocene as a granodiorite intrusion (40 Ma) reacted with country rocks in the Concepcion del Oro area of central Mexico.
