English: Garnet peridotite from the Precambrian of Norway.
This beautiful rock from near Åheim, Norway looks like eclogite, which is a crystalline-textured, very high grade metamorphic rock composed of garnet and omphacite pyroxene. But it's not. This is peridotite, a crystalline-textured, olivine-rich, ultramafic, intrusive igneous rock. The red masses are garnet and the green material is olivine. Peridotites are quarried in the Åheim area for their olivine content, which has multiple industrial and environmental uses. Geologic unit: Almklovdalen Peridotite (Western Gneiss Region), apparently Proterozoic (possibly Paleoproterozoic) Locality: undisclosed/unrecorded site near the town of Åheim, Vanylven Municipality, Møre og Romsdal County, southwestern Norway (probably from the Gusdal Olivine Pit - also known as the Åheim Olivine Pit - a quarry 3 to 4 kilometers east-southeast of Åheim; quarry is at 62° 01' 14.08" North latitude, 05° 35' 27.92" East longitude; other quarries are nearby) |
