| Description |
Hong Kong Museum of History. Light industry drove Hong Kong's economy in the postwar recovery years. However, to compete with cheaper workers in mainland China and elsewhere, Hong Kong garment workers had to put in long hours for low pay in atrocious conditions. After several worker strikes in the late 1960s, provisions were put in place to ensure better working conditions and better pay. Even now, Hong Kong's garment industry is notable - a custom-tailored suit is often what many visitors end up with. |
