| Description | Tavern at Garfield Farm and Tavern in St. Charles (1846). Timothy Powers Garfield designed and owned the combination tavern and house. St. Charles was an important stop on the road west from Chicago, as roads branched off to Oregon IL, Iowa, Galena, and Sycamore. A regular stagecoach passed by the tavern daily. The tavern provided bed and board for 37 and a half cents per night. A Garfield family diary reports that as many as 64 guests stayed at once. |
