She loved state and show, and many times honouredMatthew Parker, the Archbishop par excellence of the Reformation,by visiting him during his Primacy of seventeen years. But shedisliked the idea of a married clergy; and on one occasion, aftera sojourn of three days at Lambeth, while thanking her host onher departure for his hospitality, she did not hesitate to makesundry caustic, and disagreeable remarks to his wife, in bidding herfarewell. Grindal, the next Archbishop, came under the ban ofHer Graces displeasure, and to him she paid no visits, even whenhe became old and enfeebled ; but she was frequently the guestof his successor, Whitgift, visiting him no less than fifteen times,and she sometimes stayed two or three days at Lambeth. The Gatehouse dominates the precincts, and its aspect can haveso little changed in four hundred years, that, when the great gatesare closed, and the twentieth century shut out, it requires but a 46

And so we will picture her on a certain fine day in the year 1574,when she has come to pay one of her frequent visits to ArchbishopParker, and the bells of Lambeth Church tower are ringing merrily.It is the time when lilies blow, and clouds are highest up in air; and as she issues from the shadow of the archway, the sunlightflashes on the jewel in the little green cap that partially concealsher frizzy, red-gold hair. She is mounted on a richly caparisonedpalfrey, and its saddle cloth nearly reaches the ground. Herriding coat of green velvet, richly wrought in a diaper pattern withgold and seed pearls, stirred by the movement of the horse, showsa lining of cloth of silver, and we catch a glimpse of a jewelledstomacher, and a heavy rope of pearls. Her ruff to-day is lace-trimmed, but of comparatively modest dimensions; and
