Description
English: Gangotri (Hindi: गंगोत्री) is a town and a Nagar Panchayat (municipality) in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is a Hindu pilgrim town on the banks of the river Bhagirathi and origin of River Ganges. It is situated 3140m above sea level. It was originally built in 1807 by Gurkha general Amar singh thapa but is then reconstructed in 1922 by king of Jaipur Savay madhosinghji and its final renovation was done in 2014-15. Gangotri shrine remains close during winters that is from November to April.
