The C^^ercaillie is a bird in wliidi albini.^m, or anv^■ariety, is extremely rare; and after a careful searchamongst the best British collections, I have not been ableto discover a Britisliddlled variety. In the year 1889,however, throui>h tlie kindness of Colonel Richardson i^f 50 GAME BIRDS AND SHOOTING-SKETCHES Ballatliie, Pertlishire, I became the fortunate possessor ofthe beautiful variety figured on p. 47. This is, I believe,the only known British variety, and its extreme raritymay be judged from the fact that, out of thousands andthousands of Caper that are annually received fromNorwav, Sweden, Russia, and Germany, as vet no otheralbino, or variety, has appeared in the London markets,althouoh numbers of naturalists and the oame-dealersthemselves are constantly on the look - out for suchvarieties.^ Instances occasionally occur amongst birds of thefemale assuming the plumage of the male, but with thisspecies it is somewhat rare, and most
