lated, and some-times all three varieties are found in the same band. Their horns arenot so massive as the common big-horn, but for spread and fine pointscannot be beaten. GOATS. Mountain-goat (Oreamiius montana).—Wherever there are highmountains of a rugged nature on the mainland you can be practicallysure of finding goats. While there are plenty in the interior, there are even more onthe coast, as, since the Indians gave up hunting them for their skins, there are only a few places where they are molested. There are evena few on the mountains close to Vancouver, while a little farther north,up any of the inlets, they may generally be seen from the sea by theaid of binoculars. There are none on ^^ancouver Island, nor. in fact, on any of theislands, with the possible exception of Pitt, King, and one or two otherlarge islands in the north.

In the Selkirks and Rockies they are of mediumsize, and are generally of the silver-tip colour when in full pelage, andare then the choicest of all grizzlies; they also have the long bluntclaws, and their main habitat is fairly high in the mountains, seldombeing seen in the valleys, except in the north, where they come downto fish salmon. As you get nearer the coast they appear to increasein size and become of browner colour, until, actually on the coast, the grizzly bear has a stro
