in addition to the famous big-horn sheep, which reaches its higheststage of development there, there are moose, wapiti, mule, and white-tailed deer, goats, black and grizzly bear, and caribou. Wapiti are not allowed to be shot, and the present close seasonis liable to be extended for a year or two; when it opens there willbe excellent sport, as these magnificent animals grow horns quiteequal to those in Wyoming and are rapidly increasing in numbers.Aloose are fairly plentiful in the northern portion, but as they havebeen a little overshot a close season is likely to be declared at anytime. There are still a fair number of sheep, but as they frequentthe highest peaks hunting them is arduous work and should only beattempted by men of experience. Caribou are only found in the Selkirks. Goats and grizzly bearare very plentiful, though there are probably more in the Selkirksthan elsewhere. There are also a good many grouse and some excellent wildfowl-shooting in the valley of the Columbia.

Coming farther south, there are said to be sheep on some of the tributaries of the PeaceRiver, but of what species or in what numbers is unknown. All alongthe Peace River bear are very numerous, and there are a fair numberof moose. Farther south again the headwaters of the Eraser River arereached, and of late years these parts have come into great repute ashunting-grounds. Owing to the salmon ascending the river everyyear, it is a great bear country, both black and grizzly being extremelyplentiful in the fall, when they congregate on all the smaller streamsto feed on salmon. In addition, there are a great many moose, caribouon the higher plateaus, goa
