but a few specimens are taken on Aancouver Island. Badger (Tanidca americana).—Found throughout the interior. Porcupine (Ercthiaon cpixanthus).—Found everywhere on themainland. Northern Hare (Lepus amcricanus).—Extremely plentiful in thenorth and more or less so everywhere. Jack-rabbit (Lepus texianus).—Not plentiful; have been taken inthe Okanagan District. Bairds Hare (Lepus bairdii).—Not plentiful; have been taken inthe Okanagan District. Little Chief Hare (Lagomys).—Found on the mainland; plentifulin East Kootenay. Polecat, Little Striped Skunk (Spilogala phcnax latrions).—Common on the mainland. Skunk (Mephitis spissigrada).—Common on the mainland. Weasel (Putoris steatori).—Found throughout the Province. Fur-seal (Callorhinus ursinns).—Occasionally taken in HecateStrait. Llair-seal (Phoca litulina).—Aery plentiful all along the coastand for some distance up the large rivers. Sea-lion (Eumetopias stelleri).—Fairly plentiful on the coastnorth of 51 degrees.

47 WILDFOWL. DUCKS AND GEESE. At the right time and at the right places, excehent wildfowl-shooting can be obtained, and there are few spots in the Provincewhere a few birds cannot be bagged. The season for wildfowl is opened every year by Order in Council.as is the case with all birds, but. with the exception of AancouverIsland, September ist is almost certain to be the opening date. Fromthis time until the end of October the best sport is obtained in theinterior. After this date the frost usually drives the birds down to thecoast. In the interior the best shooting is generally obtained about 150-Mile House, on the Cariboo Road, but it varies a good deal, accordingto whether the numerous lakes and ponds have sufficient water. Othergood places are: The Columbia \alley, in East Kootenay (reachedfrom either Golden or Cranbrook). Salmon Arm. Savonas, OkanaganLanding, Nicola, and Kootenay Landing.
