Bill red, tip black.—Inwinter : Pale rosy.—In summer : Bright rose, with cherry-colouredplumes on scapulars. (S. F. i. 35.) Family CYGNID^. Lengthened neck, but short legs. Bill high at base and of equalbreadth throughout. Of very large size. Feed on seeds, roots ofwater-plants, and also on grass. Sexes alike, no seasonal change. Genus CYGNUS. kvkvos = a Swan.
