[edit]DescriptionGambleside Eastern Cross Marker Stone - geograph.org.uk - 509047.jpg |
English: Gambleside Eastern Cross Marker Stone. On Gambleside Moor were located two ancient crosses, their sites shown on the first OS map. This is a marker stone to mark the position of Eastern Cross (also known as Lower Cross and Cross).
The cross originally consisted of a plain shaft with a cross carved on to it socketed into a 3 feet by 2 feet square stone base. The cross is reported to have been restored in 1902 by Alderman Samuel Compston of Crawshawbooth and at that time a new stone shaft was fitted into the base stone. However all that remains now is this marker stone. It is thought that the cross was a memorial or burial monument not a wayside cross like the western cross 509033 |
