Another nice day in June free of rain, so I decided to try my new Fujifilm FinePix S2980 out at Smethwick Galton Bridge (including the railway, bridges and canals). Taken from Galton Bridge. Smethwick Galton Bridge Station from near the historic Galton Bridge. Galton Bridge is Grade I listed. In the entry for SANDWELL MB BIRMINGHAM CANAL 9/13 18/13 Birmingham Level, Smethwick Galton Bridge, Roebuck Lane The address shall be amended to read: BIRMINGHAM CANAL Birmingham Level, Smethwick Galton Bridge including attached railway bridge span, Roebuck Lane The following shall be added at the end of the description: Later C19 section over railway to south-west has similar brick and stone abutments, the north-eastern a continuation of that of the earlier section. Single rounded brick arch with cast iron railings and lamps. ------------------------------------ SANDWELL MB BIRMINGHAM CANAL SP 0189 SW SP 08 NW Birmingham Level, Smethwick 9/13 Galton Bridge, 18/13 Roebuck Lane 2.8.72 I Road bridge, now footbridge, over New Main Line of Birmingham Canal. 1829 by Telford. Cast iron. Brick abutments have some sandstone dressings. Single segmental arch of 150 foot span carries road across Smethwick cutting. Arch formed by girders pierced in lattice pattern, with lattice bracing in spandrels. "Horsley Iron Works 1829" is said to be cast in four places. "Galton Bridge" is cast above the centre on each side. Cast iron railings terminate at stone piers with Gothic blind tracery. Named after Samuel Tertius Galton, one of the BCN committee.
Listing NGR: SP0150289342 Smethwick Galton Bridge Station - Low Level (for trains on the New Street lines - destinations include Wolverhampton, Liverpool, Walsall etc). Wasn't too bothered about the Low Level - but got this Arriva Trains Wales Class 158 train on the Birmingham bound platforms (for International via New Street). 158829 |
