Summary
[edit]DescriptionGallows Hill, Omagh - geograph.org.uk - 127220.jpg |
English: Gallows Hill, Omagh. This patch of grass is all that remains and is behind Trinity Church. It was the site of the public gallows, where public hangings took place in the 18th Century. Local tradition has it that the last man to be hanged was a highwayman called Tom Eccles (c1790). For most of the 19th Century it became the site of the cattle market, hence its other name, Fair Hill. It was also been referred to as the "Cow Commons" by the locals. In the background is Trinity Presbyterian Church which celebrated its 250 anniversary on the site in 2004. It is the oldest established church in Omagh. |
