Summary
[edit]DescriptionGallotia atlantica 2.jpg |
The Atlantic Lizard, Gallotia atlantica, is the smallest representative of the genus Gallotia, a genus of "giant lizards" endemic to the Canary Islands. In its natural range (Lanzarote & Fuerteventura) this species is common and widespread. The nominate subspecies Gallotia atlantica atlantica (PETERS & DORIA, 1882) is confined to Lanzarote, whereas the very similar G. a. mahoratae lives on nearby Fuerteventura. Males are recognised by their larger overall size (up to 28,5 cm), heavier-built heads and large turquoise-blue side-spots, which are either absent or smaller in the females.
