The term Tablet of Abydos has been applied to an inscription discovered on the sidewall of a small building, partly executed in the rock, at a distance from the principal pile atAbydos, the present El Arabat Mad Founah, 26° 10 north latitude, 32° 5 east longitude. It wasfirst discovered by Mr. J. W. Bankes in 1818, in an excavation undertaken by him for thepurpose of obtaining an accurate ground-plan of the extensive ruins of Abydos, and clearedout of the sand which concealed it. M. Caillaud^ subsequently found it in 1822, and senta drawing of it to M. Champollion, who published an engraving of it in his second Letter toM. le Due de Blacas relative to Egyptian History.
