English: Proposal by retired military chaplain (Rabbi) Arnold E. Resnicoff to the U.S. military (via Armed Forces Chaplains Board) to change the insignia for U.S. military chaplains. Since 1888,chaplains have worn the religious symbol of their faith, which Resnicoff says symbolizes diversity without unity. His recommendation is to have a symbol that embodies both "unity and diversity," with every chaplain sharing one basic insignia within which the individual faith group symbol would be included. The universal symbol includes the shepherd's crook, the first symbol used for U.S. military chaplains (1880-1888) and a book, symbolizing both the wisdom of every faith and the founding documents of the U.S. upon which the unique American chaplaincy vision is based. Resnicoff has recommended two alternatives, the first with an open book, and this one — in case space is a consideration — with a closed book. |
