Description
English: The Galileo spacecraft atop its two-stage Inertial Upper Stage has just been released from the space shuttle in this artist's rendering. Galileo is scheduled to be launched to Jupiter in October or November 1989. The reconfigured spacecraft includes the small sunshade atop the furlable antenna and a large sunshade below the antenna to protect the spacecraft and instruments in its six-year voyage which includes a gravity-assist encounter at Venus and two at Earth to reach sufficient velocity to reach Jupiter by November 1995. The trajectory has been dubbed VEEGA, for Venus-Earth-Earth Gravity Assist.
