As Latin did not have a separate letter 'U' and 'V' was used for 'V' and 'U' alike, the inscription on the picture reads "Gallileus Gallileus, Math(ematic)us", i.e.: a latinized version of Galilei's name, and a short form for "mathematicus", i.e.: "mathematician". |
