from a mould of a terra-cotta bust made in1610 by Giovanni Caccini, the sculptor, by desire ofCosimo II. Over this and on both sides of theentrance door, on large marble scrolls, areengraved long eulogies of the master.^ But Viviani was not content with these piousmemorials. Dying in 1703, he left his propertyto his nephew, the Abbe Jacopo Panzanini,charged with the condition of erecting a suitablemonument in bronze and marble as soon aspermission to do so could be obtained. For overthirty years no attempt was made to carry out hiswishes, and then the business was taken in hand, ^ Brewster ( Martyrs of Science) gives a copy of this inscrip-tion, but not quite accurately. See Alberis Opera di Galileo,vol. XV. p. 405. ^ For these, see Alberis vol. xv. pp. 373-80. Viviani had alsocaused a medal to be struck in honour of Galileo ; and no less thanfive other commemorative medals were issued during his residencein Padua and Florence. In 1734, enquiries were made atRome as to whether there was any decree of theHoly Office which would prevent the erection ofa monument. The reply, i6th June 1734, wasthat there was nothing against such a proposal,pi-ovided the intended inscription were submittedfor approval. The work was accordingly takenin hand, but dragged on slowly for nearly threeyears. Finally, on the night of 12th March 1737,and in presence of the leading clergy, of allthe professors of the schools of Florence and Pisa,and of learned, literary, and artistic men from allparts of Italy, Galileos remains were removedwith great pomp to the mausoleum in the northaisle of Santa Croce—the Pantheon of theFlorentines — whither also were conveyed theremains of Viviani, according to his last wishes.
