Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Galilei telescopes.

(3) Designer and constructor: Galileo Galilei, ca 1610. Wood, paper, copper; length 1273 mm. Museo Galileo, Florence, Inv. 2427. A telescope designed and built by Galileo Galilei around 1610. Wood, paper, copper. The double-convex lens has a diameter of 51 mm, is 2.5 mm thick in the middle and has a focal length of 1330 mm. The eyepiece consists of a plano-concave lens 26 mm in diameter, 3 mm thick in the middle and has a focal length of -94 mm. The magnification is therefore 14x, and the field of view is only 15 arc minutes (a quarter of a degree). The rest is made of wood, paper and copper. Galilei also designed other devices for the telescope, a micrometer to measure the distance of Jupiter's moons and a helioscope to observe the Sun in rear projection. Prince Federico Cesi, the founder of the Accademia Lincei, named the instrument the telescope in 1611.

(4) Galilei's older telescope. Designed and produced Galileo Galilei, 1609. Wood, leather; length 927 mm. Museo Galileo, Florence, Inv. 2428.

A telescope designed and built by Galileo Galilei in the winter between 1609. Wood, leather. The plano-convex lens has a diameter of 37 mm, but an aperture of only 15 mm, is 2.0 mm thick in the centre and has a focal length of 980 mm. The eyepiece consists of a biconvex lens of 22 mm diameter, 1.8 mm thick in the middle and has a focal length of -47.5 mm. The magnification is therefore 21x, the field of view is only 15 arc minutes (quarter degree).

Ideatore, costructore: Galileo Galilei, 1609. Legno, pelle; lungheza 927 mm. Museo Galileo, Firenze, Inv. 2428.
