Title
Portrait of Infanta Maria Luisa of Spain (1745–1792), as Grand Duchess of Tuscany, later Holy Roman Empress, half-length, wearing the Order of the Starry Cross
Description
English: Portrait of Maria Luisa of Spain (1745-1792), formerly identified as Catherine II of Russia (1729-1796). "The present painting is one of the earliest portraits of the Grand Duchess, painted in 1766 by the Florentine artist Gaetano Piattoli. He was a pupil of François Rivière and court painter to the Grand Dukes. His wife Anna was a very renowned pastellist. Piattoli paid registration fees at the Accademia in Florence from 1738 onwards, and was elected academician on 11 January 1739 and consigliere in 1762. His self-portrait is part of the portrait collection of the Corridoio Vasariano in Florence (inv. 1890, no. 2029)."
