English: GWR Collett "King" Class 4-6-0 No.6023 "King Edward II" with 4-row superheater and single chimney, Collett 4,000 gll tender, newly restored in 1949 BR Caledonian Blue livery looking superb at the Great Western Society's Three Halls Festival, Didcot Railway Centre, 22 September 2023.
The 'Kings' were an enlargement of the 'Castles' & 'Stars' and the most powerful 4-6-0's ever built in Britain; they were the only 4-6-0's to be placed in BR's top power class for express passenger engines - '8P'. No.6000 'King George V' attained the highest ever drawbar horsepower attained by a 'King' - 1,951 edhp. No.6001 'King Edward VII' attained the highest ever speed recorded by a 'King' - 109mph. Both were fitted with 4-row superheaters and double chimneys for their records. |
