| Description |
English: GWR "Castle" 4-6-0 (with double chimney & 4-row superheater) No.5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe" on the Bristol Temple Meads - Paddington leg of "The Great Britain V" tour, surmounting Horfield Bank with purring exhaust and very little sound - it was so quiet that the photographers awaiting it were taken by surprise. The morning was dreadful with driving rain but despite what must have been a slippery rail and having "12 on", 5043 climbed Horfield Bank with such ease that it put many a larger Pacific to shame. But then the Great Western 4-6-0's were always very sure-footed engines. 5043 has a Hawksworth 4,000 gll tender and is in BR lined green livery with 1949 totem. 04/12. |
