Description

Building of train station in El Rancho, Guatemala. El Rancho is an important point on the line from Guatemala City to Puerto Barrios. The curvy line from Guatemala City, going through a mountainous landscape, is changing there to a relatively straight line to the Caribbean coast. As a result, trains of Ferrovías Guatemala change engines there. Small ones, suitable for sharp curves, are used in the direction of Guatemala City; bigger and more powerful ones in the direction of Puerto Barrios. As the board on the station building shows, Guatemalan railroads traditionally measure distances in miles rather than kilometers. (Otherwise, Guatemala uses a metric system.).

The picture also shows a pole of a disused signal.
