Nederlands: Om dit monument goed te kunnen begrijpen moeten we iets weten van de oude leer van de katholieke kerk. Deze leer stelde dat de ziel van een levenloos geboren baby niet naar de hemel ging maar naar een ander (eeuwig) verblijf het z.g. voorgeborchte van de kinderen, omdat de erfzonde niet was uitgewist door de doop. De baby was niet gedoopt en daarmee geen lid van de kerkgemeenschap. Daarom werd de baby zonder kerkelijke plechtigheid in niet-gewijde aarde begraven (“achter de heg” zoals de volksmond zei). Voor de kerk bestond dit kindje niet maar voor de ouders natuurlijk wel. Het had natuurlijk gewoon bestaan en had plaats in het leven van de ouders. Gelukkig heeft de katholieke kerk een ander inzicht gekregen en de leer aangepast. De oude leer echter heeft veel leed veroorzaakt en daarom worden op veel plaatsen monumenten opgericht voor deze kinderen, om recht te doen en om het leed te verzachten. |
