[edit]DescriptionGBT MFS Faido EST-OS.jpg |
English: Looking south in the eastern tube of the Gotthard Base Tunnel at Multi-Function Station Faido, Canton Ticino, Switzerland. The tunnel boring machine coming from Bodio made its breakthrough here Sept. 6 2006 under jubilation of a crowd of 2000 VIP, guests and workers after excavating 13.5 km since 2002.
Photo taken on an open doors day. Temperature is 28°C (would be around 40°C without cooling), humidity is 100% or above (almost steamy climate) Once completed the 2 km long MFS Faido will be a multi-purpose station 2000 meters below ground level for maintenance and emergency evacuation purposes accessible through a 2.7 km long tunnel with a gradient of more than 12%. The entrance of the access tunnel is in Polmengo TI close to the village of Faido. |
