Garðakirkja er í Garðaprestakalli í Kjalarnesprófastsdæmi. Í Garðasókn eru tvær kirkjur: Garðakirkja og Vídalínskirkja. Garðakirkja á Álftanesi er vegleg kirkja á sögufrægum stað. Hún hefur átt tímana tvenna kirkjan, sem þar er nú. Hún var reist 1879-80 og Pétur Sigurgeirsson, biskup, vígði hana á öðarum degi hvítasunnu. Kirkjan er úr hlöðnu grjóti úr holtinu fyrir hana. Hinn 20. desember 1914 var nýja kirkjan í Hafnarfirði vígð og frá sama tíma var Garðakirkja formlega lögð niður. Gekk nú á ýmsu uns konur í Garðahreppi tóku málið í sínar hendur á öndverðu ári 1953 og hafði kirkjan þá verið rústir einar að heita má í aldarfjórðung. Var kirkjan svo endurreist og endurvígð af biskupi hinn 20. mars 1966, þegar 300 ár voru liðin frá fæðingu Jóns Vídalíns. |
