Description
English: "Authentic old legend on the reverse (written in German) says following: "Maria Amalia /... /duchess di Parma /geb. 1746, gest. 1804 /... /G... Laurent /Bildhauer u.(nd) Maler /1726 - 1788". The sitter's identity is confirmed by comparison with another portrait of her from the same period - see our image nr. 8). it is a miniature portrait of Empress Maria Theresia's daughter, Archduchess Maria Amalia (1746-1804; see our images nr. 10-11 with her biography). She is depicted here as a married woman (since 1769), consort of Duke Ferdinand of Parma (1751-1802). It is the work of a still unknown miniaturist of 2nd half of 1the 18th century, a certain "G... Laurent", whose name is provided only through the aforementioned legend. This small portrait was shown in 1906 at the Berlin exhibition of portrait miniatures (see image nr. 12 with corresponding clips from Thieme-Becker)."
