Description
Hetsch studied in Rome 1812-1815. There he met the Danish architect Peder Malling, who introduced him to Eckersberg and Bertel Thorvaldsen. The Danes in Rome suggested that Hetsch should come to Denmark, which he did, becoming a Danish citizen in 1822. Eckersberg and Hetsch formed a life-long friendship while in Rome.

Inscriptions Unsigned
Notes In the catalog for the 1825 Charlottenborg Exhibition, there was just a mention of two portraits (no. 10 & 11) by Eckersberg, with no further identification. But a note under the stretcher established that the present painting was actually no. 11. https://kunstbiblioteket.kb.dk/objekter/udstillingskataloger/Udst_0658.pdf
