Information plaque at the foot of the famous Goeltzschtalbruecke, perhaps from DDR times. Details - 26 millions bricks, built in connection with the Elstertal bridge at Jocketa between 1846 and 1851 during the construction of the Elstertalbahn between Leipzig and Southern Germany. Length 574m, Height 78m, 81 arches over 4 levels, maximum span 31m. Architect - the engineer and lecturer Johann Andreas Schubert , b 1808 in Wernesgrün, Vogtland from Dresden. 1700 builders involved in its construction, working upto 13 hours per day, with 30 deaths. The Revolution of 1849 interrupted construction. In 1932, Communists scrawled VOTE Thaelmann ON THE BRIDGE. Destruction of the bridge in 1945 by the Wehrmacht was prevented. Maintenance by the Plauen bridge department of Deutsche Reichsbahn. Wikipedia page about the bridge here It is a favoured suicide spot. Elektrification will occur of the route from 2010 onwards with masts installed on the bridge. |
