Summary

[edit]
Description
English: c/n 4268

The Ki-45 was a twin-engined heavy fighter used by the Imperial Japanese Army, where it was officially known as the ‘Type 2 Two-seat fighter’. The name Toryu translates as ‘Dragonslayer’, while the type had the Allied reporting name ‘Nick’. The type first flew in January 1939 and over 1,700 were built of which this is the only survivor. She was captured at Fujigaya, to the East of Tokyo, in 1945 and shipped to the United States for evaluation, where she was given the Foreign Evaluation identity FE-701, later changed to T2-701. She was flown extensively and was found to have very good flying characteristics, although it handled poorly on the ground and had a cramped cockpit. She was later stored for the National Air Museum and was eventually officially transferred to the Smithsonian Institute around 1960. With the wings and tailplane remaining in store, the unrestored fuselage is seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
