Itis planned to have all of the stone work (except the retainingwall on each side of the monument along the road, which willbe of French local stone) of American granite, cut in this countrywith a rubbed surface to bring out the color. Work surrounding Memorial. The present aspect of the grounds surrounding the memorialbetween the roadway and the plateau above the Rocks is suchthat little should be done in the way of artificial treatment.The scheme proposed provides for a simple promenade borderedwith trees leading from each side of the upper terrace of thememorial to the extremities of the lot, where access to it is hadby steps from the roadway. The landscape around the baseof the Rocks should not be disturbed, as it is well grown withgood-sized trees, and is in character with the rugged rocksrising above them. The grounds between the road
