on the flanks andback. The fur of the throat, neck, chest, belly and on the innersurface of the legs is white. The tail in winter specimens is oftenwhite for the latter half of its length, and is marked with broad blackrings. The North China species is a large animal, usually exceedingthose seen in travelling menageries, which are almost invariably eitherfrom India or Africa. )\Iany specimens taken in winter are so lightcoloured and have such thick fur that they might easily be mistakenfor the snow leopard. The ounce, however, has the black markings in the form of largerings instead of dots or rosettes. They are not nearly so pronouncedas the markings of the leopard, while the fur of the back and sidesis of a very pale, fawn-yellow. The skin is also very muchmore valuable. The two animals are about the same size. The ounceis found in Thibet,, the higher parts of the extreme western border ofChina, throughout the Altai Mountains, across Southern Siberia andin North Manchuria. PUttc X.

X FUli BEARING MAMMALS. 47 The next rug producing animal is the wolf, which is representedin China by the subspecies Canis lupus tschiliensis. This is a largegaunt creature, which does not pack like the Russian wolf, preferringto range th-e country alone, or in company with its mate. In size itabout equals a mastiff or deer-hound. Though a powerful and cunninganimal, it is inclined to be cowardly, and secures its food, especiallyin thickly populated areas, by snatching off sheep, small pigs, dogsand even children straying on the outskirts of the villages. Whenpressed by hunger, it will attack a grown man, even if the latter bearmed. In some districts wolves are a great pest, and there are veryfew places entirely free from them. The skin of the North China wolfis not very good, being worth not more than $5.00 or $6.00. Theskins from Mongolia, which have much thicker fur, and are considerablylighter in colour, are worth at least double that sum. All kinds ofpractices are resorted to in
