Jokes have been a part of human culture since ancient times. The recent discovery of a document entitled Philogelos (fans laugh) gives us an idea of ancient humor. Written in Greek and Hierocles Filagriusom, this document dates from the third or fourth century AD, and contains some 260 jokes. Given that the humor of our modern culture recent XIX century is sometimes incomprehensible to us today, the humor of this ancient document looks surprisingly familiar. It has different patterns , among them favorites are absent-minded professor, the eunuch , people with hernias or bad breath. Many jokes are based on the idea of the nature of knowledge of the character, for example:

Barber, a bald man and the absent-minded professor travel together. For the night, they decided to take turns to guard their expensive baggage. When it was the turn of the barber for the duty, he was bored and just for fun shaved the head of the professor. When the ill professor woke up on his shift, he touched his head and said, "Well, the stupid hairdresser. He woke the bald guy instead me."

Jokes are usually formed according to standardized construction schemes. A narrative is provided about three increases. Among the audience, there is the knowledge that the last increase, the situation can become so grotesque that no one offered the story must take more seriously. Standard for the joke, the members of three different nationalities presents a serious problem, the first behaves strangely in the situation, the second increase this latter, however, acts obviously grotesque, so the signal is given to distance himself from the situation offered Ernst.

The story of the joke usually demand presuppose group consensus. There are insider jokes , you can laugh about the only who sees the facts in his earnestness. Awkward it is usually so well, laugh with a stranger with a group in which a joke is told. The laughter of the group usually dies when an outsider mitlacht. The group behavior only allows members to distance themselves from the seriousness of the topic. Who does not belong, shall in no unsolicited raise over what the group ultimately just when laughing is very serious.

An inside joke is a joke, its understanding requires special knowledge within certain groups of people, a group of friends or colleagues, or within a family. A very common form of insider joke is the scientific joke . Inside jokes appear in art and here especially in film and television on, especially as the quote about a particular movie scene. The motive of such jokes is usually a parody of the cited work, sometimes a homage . Frequently used forms of inside jokes in film and television are running gags and cameos .

The British psychologist Richard Wiseman tried from September 2001 to find out by means of an Internet survey, which joke is perceived by most people as funny. Prompted to provide their own favorite joke on the page and evaluate the jokes others followed, about 500,000 people from 70 countries. They represented a total of 40,000 jokes to whom 1.5 million reviews yet. The most votes received the following joke:

"Two hunters are in the woods, when one of them collapses. He does not seem to breathe, and his eyes are glazed. The other guy takes out his phone and calls the emergency services gasps: 'My friend is dead! What can I do? ' - Then the attendant, 'Calm down. I can help you. First, we should make sure that he is dead. ' Pause, then a shot. Back on the phone, he says, 'OK, now what?' "
