Funerary inscription of Gerontius, age 4, and Constantius, age 2 (ICUR VIII 23265). The first ten lines are a poem in elegiac couplets; the final four lines record the names and ages of the two boys and the dates of their deaths. Now in the portico of S. Maria in Trastevere, Rome.

    quos rapuit parvos praecipita<ta> dies,
sed mihi quae requies onerosa in luce moranti,
    cui solus superest et sine fine dolor?
quam male de vobis fallacia gaudia vidi
    et decepturus me iugulavit amor.
reddebar teneris in vultibus ipsaque per vos
    tempora credebam lapsa redisse mihi.
sentio quid faciat spes inrita pessima sors est
    supplicii afflicto quem sua vota praemunt.
