English: Fundamental Bench Mark, Bowling An original plaque, set into the side of the pillar, simply says "Ordnance Survey Bench Mark"; the mark itself, located on top of the pillar, bears the inscribed text "Height Above Datum".

For the text of the more recent plaque on top of the pillar, see: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/620987 This pillar was located within a densely shaded wooded area, not far from Manse Road. Sometimes bench marks are surrounded by protective railings, but none were present here (the pillar is not located beside any footpaths, and is set in a fairly secluded location). |
