Description

Allocated the British Aircraft Preservation Council identity BAPC205 Now painted to represent the Hurricane flown by Sergeant Ray Holmes of 504 (County of Nottingham) Squadron, based here at RAF Hendon. On 15th September 1940 he was on patrol over London and spotted a German bomber (a Dornier 17 of KG 76) preparing to attack. He made a head-on attack but then found he was unable to fire. He then made a ramming attack and severed the Dornier’s tail with his wing. The Dornier crashed near Victoria Railway station, while Holmes successfully bailed out of his stricken Hurricane, which crashed on the crossroads of Buckingham Palace Road and Pimlico Road. The Hurricane crash site was excavated in 2004 as part of a TV documentary. RAF Museum London. Hendon, Greater London, UK
