Each of the knitted poppies mounted on sticks surrounding the memorial, erected to mark the centenary of the 1918 armistice, commemorates a villager killed in service in World War One. There were 45 such poppies (as opposed to 37 names on the carved memorial), reflecting research carried out during the centenary of the conflict.
