Fort Qu'Appelle Geolog Stop 12 Fort Qu'Appelle Saskatchewan The marshy spot here is the discharge area of a spring. Springs develop at spots where water bearing layers crop out of the surface. This occurs most commonly at spots such as this where a valley is eroded down to where it cuts through one of these aquifers, causing a leak. In this case, the aquifer is the sandy Echo Lake Gravel that fills the ancient buried Muscow Valley. The discharge point, or spring head can be located by walking around the rights side of the spring bog. The spring bog itself is separated from Echo Lake by a Sandy beach-ridge formed by wave action and covered with willows. |
