English: Pupils of the Free School Community in Wickersdorf near Saalfeld in the Thuringian Forest. Partly they are wearing white berets, which were part of the school uniform. Due to their colour and the way they were worn on the back of the head by some older students (well visible in this photo) these caps were jokingly referred to as 'bakers' caps. The caps, which are attributable to the German youth movement (Bündische Jugend), were undesirable during the Nazi era. From 1933, the uniforms of Deutsches Jungvolk (younger boys up to the age of 13) and the Hitler Youth (older boys over the age of 14) on the school grounds and in class were dominant. |
