The lona grape is unsurpassed in quality by any ofthe native grapes, having a delicate and sprightly flavor, whichmakes it one of the best grapes for dessert and for wines. Thebunches and berries are of medium size, the fruit being of abeautiful light-red color. The lona is best adapted for local-market sale, as it does not ship well and, moreover, must becared for much better than commercial grape growers arewilling to care for grapes. To do well it must be planted in adeep, rather dry, sandy or gravelly soil and in a region that isfairly free from fungi. Fig. 24 shows a bunch of lona grapes. 43. The Jefferson grape is a cross between the Concordand the lona.
