Title
Scene e Machine preparate alle Nozze di Teti Balletto
Description
English: Frontispiece to a booklet (26 pages; 37 cm) with description and 10 double-folding plates depicting set designs by Giacomo Torelli for Le nozze di Peleo e di Tetis, an Italian opera with music by Carlo Caproli mixed with a French ballet on the same subject, performed at the Hôtel du Petit-Bourbon in Paris in 1654. The illustration portrays a partly ruined arch with a view of the Pont Neuf, the Place Dauphine, the Tour de Nesle (on the right), and Notre-Dame de Paris in the background. There are six figures in the arch believed to represent the six arts that contributed to the production: an author with a writing tablet, an architect with a compass, a sculptor with a statuette in his hand, a musician with a violoncello, a singer with a lute, and another figure with no attributes possibly representing the dance. Rays emanating from the arms of Louis XIV illuminate the arms of Cardinal Mazarin and reflect onto the six figures.
